A British Summer

For Cake Magazine

There is something strangely romantic about a British summer. The sky changes its mind, the grass turns yellow, the pavements stay grey. And somehow the girls don't seem to mind.

They put on silk and walk through concrete. Tiny dresses under oversized jackets, heels on dry grass, lipstick in the wind. A bottle of rosé from the off-licence, carried down the road as if it were champagne. They don't wait for the day to turn perfect. They take whatever it gives and make something of it.

The romance was never in the weather. It was in the attitude. A little scrappy, a little wet, never trying too hard. Beauty with the evidence still on it. That cheek cannot be styled onto someone, it has to already be there, which is exactly why it had to be cast. So we brought in actual British girls, the ones who carry that ease in how they stand and how they refuse to fuss.

What gives the story its charm is the eye behind the camera. Claudia Cantarini is Italian, and she captures this most British of rituals through a Mediterranean lens, catching a romance a native might walk straight past.

Nothing about it is polished, and that is the point.
